The nightmare continues in the remote Kazakhstan town of Kalachi, now world-famous by the apropos monikers "The Village of the Damned" and "Sleepy Hollow", as a horrifying sleeping sickness continues to ravage the population.
The first signs of the impending nightmare began four years ago, when residents began to experience a bizarre sleeping ailment, which would leave sufferers in a deep, debilitating sleep for up to six days at a time! Nothing could rouse the patients from their coma-like conditions, as doctors and medical experts convened on the sleepy town to try and discover an answer to the confounding disease.
Four years on, and the medical community is still nowhere near to discovering a reason for the troubling condition, which has infected over 160 residents, a full quarter of the population of Kalachi! The town continues to shrink, as fearful residents have fled the area, not willing to chance being infected by the disease, which seems to occur in all members of the population equally, young and old, male and female, healthy or sick.
Now, sufferers are coming forward to describe a litany of troubling side-effects of the disease. Adult male victims have claimed to wake up from their long slumbers with a voracious sexual appetite, causing alarm among female nurses in charge of their care. Male patients claim to experience extremely lucid sex dreams while in their altered states. Many others spout out foul-mouthed rants after awakening, hurling vicious invective at family members and care-givers. Children have vivid hallucinations of monsters and evil entities, often pawing and scratching at imaginary creatures while in a deep sleep, screaming out of fear. Parents often morph into disfigured beings as their children recoil in horror before the hallucinatory effects wear off after time.
Many of the residents fear they are being deliberately poisoned by evil people who want to chase the population away so they can exploit a nearby gold mine. Others believe an abandoned uranium mine once utilized by the Russian military to create nuclear weapons located on the outskirts of town is the culprit behind the disease, which has not proven fatal...as of yet. There might be something to those concerns, as the illness has yet to spread to neighboring villages, which only adds to the mystery...
